In the late 1600s, the surrounding neighborhood has become fashionable, and the wealthy Colonel Pyncheon covets Maule’s land. Several years later, Maule is hanged for witchcraft, and rumors abound that Pyncheon was behind Maule’s conviction. Maule curses Colonel Pyncheon from the scaffold, but the Colonel is unfazed; he even hires Maule’s own son to build him a new mansion with seven gables on the property. At a party held to inaugurate his new mansion, the Colonel is found dead in his study, his beard covered in blood.

Builders spent time creating a cyma, or double-curved profile, and added a scalloped fillet, or banding. The posts and beams are also a source of debate that is still being studied. There are four posts in this room and the carved shoulders do not quite match in height or design. This led to the belief in the early part of the last century that these beams were salvaged pieces from Governor Endicott’s original home. This belief is based on the knowledge that Hooper purchased part of Endicott’s land and then built his home upon it. Court records, however, do not readily point to this conclusion.
In 1668, sea captain John Turner built a multi-room house on the Salem waterfront. Three generations of Turners lived in the home, increasing its size and the family’s wealth, until John Turner III lost everything and the house was sold to another mariner, Samuel Ingersoll, in 1782. Upon Ingersoll’s death, daughter Susanna inherited the great mansion, where she was often visited by her younger cousin, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
It, like the cemetery, is intended to be a place of quiet and contemplation. Captain Samuel Ingersoll, a wealthy ship captain, purchased the property in 1782 from the third generation of Turners. Captain Ingersoll removed four of the gables to create a boxy Federal home more in keeping with the fashion of the time. After his death in 1804, his daughter Susanna Ingersoll inherited the property. The mansion was both her home and central to her successful business dealings in Salem.
Both the Witch House and the Witch Museum have made it their purpose to tell the story in graphic, even cinematic ways. His dark and impressive gabled colonial home is now a museum that intersperses stories of Corwin and the trials with everyday life in the Puritan community. The Salem Witch Museum is open throughout the year and offers two primary presentations — a deep dive into 1692 Salem and a look at the evolving perception of the witch dating back to Europe pre-1692. The museum is hard to miss, with its Gothic Revival architecture, and its central location across from Salem’s beautiful common.
In the late 17th century, Colonel Jaffrey Pyncheon falsely accused a poor carpenter, Matthew Maule, of witchcraft. Pyncheon took his land and built the luxurious Pyncheon home on it. The family has lived during the next 160 years desperately afraid of the "Maule curse".
Tours last approximately 45 minutes and take place on multiple levels in historic houses from the 1600s and 1700s. Visitors are standing, walking, or climbing stairs during these experiences. Barrio Logan was chosen as a location by owner Herb Hudson, who toured various areas in San Diego including North Park. The “Bewitched” statue is at 235 Essex St., at the intersection of Washington and Essex streets in downtown Salem.
